What is a Job Interview?

Once you have written your CV and started applying for jobs you will hopefully be invited to attend an Interview. This website provides a wealth of helpful information about how to prepare for an interview, what types of Interview Formats there are, what to Expect in an Interview, Questions to Ask, plus much more!

An interview is a conversation between two or more people. In a basic interview the interviewer (potential employer) and the interviewee (job seeker) will ask and answer a number of Interview Questions. During the job interview, the employer hopes to determine whether or not the applicant is suitable for the job, while the applicant tries to learn more about the job while also trying to impress the employer. This helps both parties determine whether there is a good fit between the job vacancy and company and the applicant’s experiences and personality.

There are four main types of Initial Interview. Each of them should be handled in a different manner and you can click on the links below to find out what they involve.

Telephone Interview
One To One Interview
Panel/Committee Interview
Group Interview

Preparing for a job interview is crucial to your success. As a general rule, it is sensible to dress to impress and wear your smartest business attire (unless instructed otherwise). It also helps to be well prepared to answer difficult Interview Questions about your CV (employment history, hobbies, education) and brush up on recent industry matters. In addition, think about a few questions of your own with regards to the company and job role. Throughout your interview remember to think about your Body Language and once the interview has finished, shake hands with the interviewer, thank them for their time and express your enthusiasm for the organisation and role. Within 24 hrs of the interview, write an Interview Thank You letter to show your enthusiasm for the job and company.
