Tips for successfully filling out a Job Application

Print off/photocopy the application form – This will give you the opportunity to do a ‘practice run’ and therefore if you make a mistake you can amend it before completing the real form.
Prepare Thoroughly – Read through the instructions and application form at least twice so you have a good understanding of what you are expected to write.
Use black ink – If you are hand writing your answers try to use black ink as this is easier to read.
Write clearly – If you are handwriting the job application form make sure your handwriting is clear and legible. The employer will be judging you on a number of criteria and messy handwriting will put them off.
Employment History - Start with your most recent job first and make sure you clearly show dates, name of employer and give a job description.
Education - Educational history and professional qualifications will be asked for usually detailing the most recent first. Include all relevant educational qualifications and training courses you have attended (if there isn’t a separate section).
Complete all requested information - Don't leave anything blank and if a question is not relevant to your skills and experiences explain why. Alternatively don’t try to squeeze too much into the space given. This will just make your form harder to read.
Double check your spelling and grammar – If you are filling out the application online it is useful to copy and paste your answers into a word document where you will be able to use spell check. Proof read your job application form before submitting it and ideally get a friend or family member to read it through too.
Be Honest - As with your CV do not tell lies on your application form as you will be found out in an interview. Prospective employers usually do checks so if asked declare anything relevant on the application form e.g. criminal record.
References – You will usually be asked to give two references so give the names of two relevant contacts that can be used as referees (usually one work and one personal). If you do not ant them being contacted before a job offer is made then make sure this is very clear.
Signing the Application Form – If asked, don’t forget to sign and date the application form.
