Hints and Tips to Help You Succeed in a Group Job Interview

Unlike a Telephone or One To One Interview it is difficult to predict what format a Group Interview will take so it is harder to prepare for. There are some things you can do to improve your chances of succeeding in a Group Interview such as:

Prepare as much as possible

Although you may not get the chance to show off all your knowledge in a Group Interview it is still very useful to gather as much information as possible. Research the company and the role before the Group Interview, and think about why you would like to work for them. A prospective employer will take into account the amount of effort that a candidate has taken to prepare and research the company prior to the interview and it will help you stand out from the crowd.

Focus on Your Body Language

Even though the interviewer may not be focused on you, be enthusiastic and smile as much as possible. Smiling will help you to relax and make you appear friendly and open to the others in the group. Don’t cross your arms and legs as this comes across as defensive and when speaking to someone, look them direct in the eye.

Establish a Rapport with the other Candidates

Try to build a rapport with the others in the Group Interview. Listen to the other candidates’ points of view and notice if someone is being left out or if someone is being shouted down. Interviewers are looking for candidates who can show leadership skills as well as teamwork.

Speak Clearly and Concisely

Talk clearly and calmly throughout the Group Interview. You may be asked to give a small, unprepared presentation or take part in a problem solving sessions or discussion group. Keep your responses relevant to the task in hand and try not to waffle. Don’t speak too fast or loudly but make sure you stand out from the crowd.

Say Thank you

At the end of the phone interview, thank the interviewers for giving you the opportunity to take part and thank them for their time. Have a few questions prepared and don't be afraid to ask what the next stage is and when you will hear any feedback.
