Frequently Asked Questions about Recruitment Agencies
What Does a Recruitment Consultant Do?
A Recruitment Consultant acts as an intermediary between an employer and job seeker. A Recruitment Agency (sometimes called a Consultancy) will have a selection of available job vacancies and their sole aim is to fill these positions as quickly and efficiently as possible. They will advertise these jobs; sift through applicants, interview and shortlist a selection of candidates for the employer. Once an employer has made an appointment the Recruitment Consultant will finalise salary details, the benefits package and start dates on behalf of the job seeker.
Should I apply for Job Direct or Use a Recruitment Agency?
Some employers do not use Recruitment Agencies because of the costs involved so will either advertise a vacancy themselves or recruitment in another way. If you have an idea of the exact companies you would like to work for it is advisable to send them your CV and a Cover Letter direct. If you need advice, don’t have a specific company in mind or are looking for a temporary job it is wise to register with a Recruitment Agency (or a number of agencies) who will have a selection of jobs that will match your skills and experiences. If you do both you should let your Recruitment Consultant know which companies you have applied to direct.
Do I have to pay a Recruitment Consultant to Find me Work?
A job seeker should never pay a Recruitment Agency to find them a job. However, they may make a charge for some of their services, such as helping you write a CV or some types of training. Always check any possible charges before using the services available.
Where Can I find a list of local Recruitment Companies?
You can either use Google, a directory e.g. www.agencycentral.co.uk, or just visit your local high street and pop in.
What Documentation do I need to have to register with a Recruitment Agency?
You may need to provide one or more of the following:
• Your CV
• Full contact details of two recent work references
• Proof of your Right to Work in the UK (if applicable)
• A Passport or National ID card
• Proof of your National Insurance Number
