How to Overcome Weaknesses in your CV

There are a number of circumstances which lead to weaknesses in your CV including:

Gaps in Your Employment History – You may have gaps in your Curriculum Vitae due to traveling, pursuing further education or taking time off to care for a family member. Periods of unemployment can be turned into strengths so explain the reason for taking time out and detail the skills, experiences and accomplishments gained whilst taking a break.

Limited Education Qualifications – Whatever the type of CV Style you choose to use, education and qualifications should be one of the last things listed. If you have limited qualifications or exam results focus either on your skills (if you are entry level) or work experience (if you have a career history). A Functional or Targeted CV will highlight relevant and transferable skills that are more relevant than GCSE or A Level results. If you are applying for a role that requires a degree or qualification you do not hold, try writing a Cover Letter to explain why your experiences should be considered as an alternative.

Overqualified For the Job – Job seekers that are relocating, have a long employment history or other personal circumstances may face the problem of being overqualified for a job vacancy. A prospective employer will question why you are applying for the job and may need convincing to invite you for an Interview. It is wise to include a Cover letter with your CV or Job Application explaining you may appear to have more skills and experience than the job spec requires but detail why you should be considered for the role.

Being Fired from Previous Job - Be as honest as possible. You do not need to include this information in your CV or Cover Letter but tell the truth if asked in an interview. Remain objective and never bad mouth previous employers or companies.

Made Redundant from a Previous Job – Redundancy can happen to anyone and is especially rife in economic downturns. You do not need to put reasons for leaving a job on a CV or Cover Letter but it may help explain a short period of unemployment or gap in your employment history.

Limited Work Experience – If you are applying for an entry level job you may not have much work experience. Write a One Page CV and highlight any skills and experiences you have gained from hobbies or voluntary work.

High Number of Previous Employers – You may be a freelancer or have worked in a number of temporary placements but too many jobs on a CV often put employers off. It is advisable to use a Targeted or Functional CV which highlight your skills, competencies and expertise under various headings, rather than providing a chronological overview of your work history.
