What To Wear For an Interview
Preparing for a job interview includes knowing what to wear to make the right first impression. Physical appearance matters in an interview and an interviewee is often judged before they have even spoken a word. The interviewer does not know you so your appearance is usually the first thing they have to go on.
Prior to the interview find out what the company dress code e.g. suit, smart-casual or casual. Also ask yourself what the person you'll be meeting is likely to wear e.g. if you are going for an interview in a warehouse, a business suit may not be the right attire.
If in doubt always wear a conservative suit. It is always better to be overdressed than under dressed in an interview! However, make sure you are feeling comfortable with what you are wearing as this will help your confidence.
General Advice on What to Wear at an Interview
Minimal make up – Women should use only a minimal amount of make up and should steer clear of very bright colours on their face or nails.
Minimal Jewellery – Either men and women should wear only one set of earrings, and one or two rings. You want your interviewer to be concentrating on what you are saying not your bling!
Piercings and tattoos – Another feature that is increasingly common, and one unlikely to deter an employer. If you can’t remove them, keep any studs small and cover any offensive or obscene body art.
Conservative Clothes – Regardless of what the dress code is, interviewees should dress conservatively. A suit is good choice for any type of interview but make sure it is clean and fits properly. Women should steer clear of low cut tops and should wear a skirt or trouser suit.
Strong Smells – Too much perfume, cologne or too little deodorant can all be big turn offs. Try not to smoke immediately prior to an interview as this can also be very off putting.
Grooming – Make sure you appear neat and tidy. Comb your hair, men should have a shave, clean your shoes and spit out gum before an interview starts.
