What is a Psychomteric Test?
The term 'psychometric' comes from the Greek words, ‘psyche’ (mind) and ‘metron’ (measure). Psychometric tests are structured exercises used to measure objectively a person’s aptitude, personality, competence, memory and intelligence.
There are two main types of Psychometric Test:
• Aptitude Tests - These are usually timed and are used to assess your abilities.
• Personality Questionnaires – Help to build up a profile of your characteristics and personality.
Psychometric tests are used by employers during various stages of the interview process. Some prospective employers use them before an interview as a way of screening out unsuitable candidates. Others use them towards the end of the selection process to help them make their final decision.
Preparing For a Psychometric Test
Practise Makes Perfect – Start practising as soon as you know you have to take a test. Aptitude Tests are a skill and a number of practise tests are available both online and in books. Find out what type of questions will be asked and practice under ‘exam conditions’.
Listen/Read The Instructions – Just before you take the test listen to, or read the instructions very carefully. If something is not clear, ask for clarification before the timed exercise begins. Once you have started read each question carefully and check pages aren’t stuck together.
Remain Calm and Rational - Focus on that Positive Mental Attitude!
Work Fast But Accurately As Possible - Ability tests are usually strictly timed so try not to spend too much time on one question. If you are struggling with an answer, move on to the next one and leave it to the end if you have time. Don't panic if you can't complete the test as not everyone will be able to! Do try to answer as many questions as possible though and if you finish early, go back over your answers and check through.
Ditch the Calculator - You can help to prepare yourself for numerical reasoning tests by practising doing sums in your head so that you are able to do simple calculations quickly, this will help you feel more prepared on the day.
Don’t forget, you have been invited to take part in a Psychometric test as the prospective employer has seen something they like in your CV or an Interview. The most important thing to do is relax, be yourself and do the best you can.
