Job Interview Hints and Tips

1. Research the company and the role before the interview, and think about why you would like to work for them. A prospective employer will take into account the amount of effort that a candidate has taken to prepare and research the company prior to attending the interview.
2. Look smart and presentable as first impressions count. Wear suitable interview attire, don’t wear too much make up or perfume and don’t chew gum.
3. Although you may be nervous, do not smoke directly before your interview as the smell may put off the interviewer.
4. Plan your journey in advance, take a copy of your route and allow plenty of time to deal with delays or traffic jams. Arrive at least 5-10 minutes early.
5. If you can’t attend the interview or think you may be late give your recruitment consultant or the company a call to let them know as early as possible.
6. Familiarise yourself with the Content of your CV and take a spare copy to brief yourself before the interview. This can also be used as a replacement should your interviewer not have one.
7. Have at least three key achievements you can talk about very confidently so you are prepared to use them as examples in your interviews.
8. Try to answer Interview Questions with more detail than yes or no. Don’t waffle, but answer in a concise and informative way.
9. Prepare some questions you would like to ask the interviewer. Relevant questions will demonstrate that you are enthusiastic about the role and the company.
10. Think about your Body Language. Try not to cross your arms as this looks defensive. Alternatively, try not to slouch in your chair, or look too laid back.
11. Avoid asking questions about salary and benefits during the first interview as this is usually discussed in more detail in a second interview.
12. Think through examples you could use in answer to Common Interview Questions. Use a balance of, work experience, academic and extra-curricular activities.
13. Maintain good eye contact with the interviewer, speak clearly during conversations and always ask for feedback.
14. At the end of the interview, shake the interviewers hand and thank them for giving you the opportunity to attend the interview.
15. Make sure you pick up business cards or contact details of those interviewing you so that you can write a thank you letter or email after your interview.
16. Clarify prior to your interview if expenses will be paid. Keep receipts for travel, accommodation and food.
