Interview Etiquette Frequently Asked Questions
Should I write a Thank You note?
Make sure you pick up business cards or contact details of those interviewing you so that you can write a thank you letter or email after your interview. Writing a thank you note shows the employer you are serious about the job and will make you stand out from the other applicants. If you had a Panel or Committee Interview, write an email to each panel member.
What is Positive Body Language?
In an interview you should concentrate on displaying positive body language. This includes, leaning forward, opening your arms (and palms), nodding in agreement, eye contact and most importantly don’t forget to smile!
What is Negative Body Language?
In an interview there are certain mannerisms that convey a negative attitude. These include, crossing your arms, avoiding eye contact, fidgeting, touching your face, and slouching in your chair.
Should I discuss my Salary Requirements in a First Interview?
Avoid asking questions about salary and benefits during the first interview as this is usually discussed in more detail in a second interview or once a job offer has been made. You have to impress the prospective employer before they start thing how much you are worth to their company!
What should I wear to an Interview?
Look smart and presentable as first impressions count. Wear suitable interview attire and both men and women should wear a suit (unless this is totally inappropriate e.g. if you are going for an interview in a warehouse, a business suit may be too smart). Don’t wear too much make up or perfume and don’t chew gum. If you are invited back for a Second Interview, try to wear a different shirt and tie or blouse.
