Second Interview Hints and Tips

As with a first interview, applicants who have been called to a second interview should be thoroughly prepared. The following tips should help during the Second Interview process.

1. Find out the names and job titles of the interviewers and what format the interview will take. Look on the internet or through company brochures for information. Try to find out something about each interviewer so you can tailor your response to Interview Questions specifically to that person.
2. If it’s been a few weeks since your initial interview, re-visit the company website and your CV to remind yourself what was discussed. Use Google and Google News to get the latest information and news on the company.
3. It's never appropriate to wear the same thing to the first and second interview so if you only have one suit wear a different shirt, tie or blouse.
4. Your first interviewer may have raised points from the first interview which need following up. Be prepared for more focus on apparent weaknesses or lack of knowledge/experience.
5. Note any questions or situations that caused you difficulty in your first interview and plan how you could handle those aspects better in the second interview.
6. Think of new examples you can refer to about your achievements and experiences.
7. Be aware that you might be asked to complete a psychometric test dealing with such things as skills, aptitude and personality.
8. Bring several copies of your CV with you just in case the interviewers do not have a copy of your CV from your first visit. The Second Interview may involve a Panel/Committee Format or a series of One to Ones.
9. Remain calm, enthusiastic and show positive Body Language. If you have difficulty answering a question, ask the interviewer to repeat it or ask them to elaborate further.
10. If invited for a second interview you may be asked to do a presentation. Allow yourself time to prepare and make sure you thoroughly understand what is expected of you. Confirm how long it should be and what format it should take. If you need any special equipment, make sure this is arranged in advance.
11. If you are going to be taken out to dinner or lunch mind your table manners and if you are unsure about correct dining etiquette skills, do some research on the internet or ask family and friends.
12. If you are offered an alcoholic drink do not drink more than one. It may be best to stick to a non alcoholic variety as you may say something you will regret if you get tipsy.
13. An interviewer may bring up the subject of salary and benefits. If a specific figure is mentioned and it is too low, don’t be shy in asking them if this is negotiable. You should be realistic and look at accepting 10-20% more than your current or last salary. More if your responsibilities are greater.
14. If you don't receive a verbal offer of employment in the Second Interview ask what the next step in the application process is. Find out how soon will a decision be made, and how they will let you know the answer.
15. If the employer makes an offer of employment ask for a few days to think about it and find out when the company needs a decision by. This gives you time to take a step back and think objectively about the salary, company benefits and job in more detail before you commit yourself.
16. Make sure you pick up business cards of those interviewing you so that you can write thank you emails. Expressing enthusiasm and a keenness to join the company directly to the person who interviewed you can be a deciding factor as to whether you are offered the job.
