Frequently Asked Questions about New Jobs

What should I wear to my first day of a New Job?
Prior to your start date find out what the company dress code is e.g. suit, smart-casual or casual. If in doubt always dress smartly as it is always better to be overdressed than under dressed. The most important thing to do is make sure you are feeling comfortable with what you are wearing as this will help your confidence and keep those first day nerves at bay! You may also have to have your photo taken for an ID card or security pass so this is another reason to look presentable.

What should I not do in a New Job?
There are a few unwritten rules of the workplace and sticking to these will help you in your first couple of weeks in a new job. These include: switch your mobile phone to silent/off in the office, don’t use the internet inappropriately, don’t arrive late for work or leave exactly on the dot, don’t take too many smoking breaks, don’t get over familiar with anyone even if they appear ‘up for a laugh’ and finally don’t gossip about any other employees.

What can I expect from my First day at work?
You will most likely be taken around for a tour of the office and be introduced to your team, managers and other employees who you will be working with. Don’t worry if you can’t remember everyone’s name initially as you will have plenty of time to get to know them better. Human Resources may have organised an induction meeting/orientation where you will be asked to fill out important documentation and can find out more about health and safety procedures. You will be assigned your desk and if your job requires internet, intranet, email access or particular computer software you will have help setting this up. Don’t forget that everyone is nervous on their first day and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

I am a Week into a New Job and am having doubts. What should I do?
Almost all jobs will have a probation period (usually 3 months) where either the employer or employee has the right to terminate the contract of employment (may be subject to a notice period). A job seeker never knows if the job will be exactly right for them until they actually start the role so occasionally people have doubts whether they have made the right decision. If you find yourself in this position in your probation period it is important to be upfront about it with your manager. Arrange a one to one meeting and try to work out your difficulties. New jobs are always daunting and it takes about 3 months to settle down so give it time. If things can’t be resolved/worked out it may be best to leave and find employment elsewhere. If this is the case, try to remain as professional and polite as possible as you never know when your paths may cross again.
